Dec 13: Nazim Mohammed and family: De Williem, WCD. armed bandits break through the roof and robbed the family of $200,000 in cash and jewelery. When the terrorised family of 6 adults and 2 children retreated to a room secured by a door with grillwork, the bandits demanded that they open up, and eventually, came down via roof. Upon noticing that the daughter, Suzie Nazim was on a cell phone to call the police, the bandits shot at her. Fortunately, she was missed. The father was beaten.

Brazilian goldminers
:
robbed by three gunmen posing as passengers on a bus traveling on the Mabura road. $132,000 in cash taken and 1 ounce raw gold.

Survival Super Market
:
G/town. Armed gunmen in a car robbed market of $600,000. That same day, it appears as if the same men and car were responsible for the holding up of a beverage truck (Guyana Beverage Company), robbing the attendants of $60,000.

Joseph Guttman
:
G/town. A gold and diamond dealer, he is attacked and robbed of $5 million in raw gold and diamond. He is beaten by the armed men; had to be admitted into hospital.

Shabudeen Kassim:
Vryheid Village, West Canje, Berbice. Young father (25) and businessman is shot down by bandits in his yard after he tried to summon help. He had just returned from the masjid with his 11/2 year old son. His uncle and aunt were also killed by bandits, in 1998. [ Note: the bandits, it appeared, also attacked and robbed a woman who had returnedf rom the wake kept for Kassim 3 days after. She managed to escape when they entered her yard.]

Doanmattie and Toolsieram Gobin:
Cornelia Ida (CI), West Coast Dem. Shop owner robbed by two armed men, one with a gun. Toolsieram is beaten, forced to hand over gold worth $1 m and $268,000 in cash. [Note: CI housing Scheme, established since 1996, heavily hit by crimes, still has no electricity.]

Colin Tudor:
One Mile, Linden. Owner of Big Red Fast Food and Gift shop is attacked by 2 gunmen.Loss, $20,000 taken. Mr. Tudor says that he's fortunate to be alive, his brother, Joseph Noel, another businessman, was killed by bandits in August 2000.

Gary Boyce:
Sophia, G/town. Security man shot to death (in chest) by man who jumped out of a car, and after the shooting, left again. Mr. Boyce was on duty at the time.

Sonia Jerrick:
East Coast Dem. Twenty-three and mother of 2 pre-teen boys, Ms. Jerrick is tragically murdered by a policeman who is a friend of hers, on her birthday. She went out with him and later in the night, was shot in the face by the cop after she refused to have sex with him.

Bel Air, G/town. Owner of a shop, robbed by armed men in a white car. Loss, $10,000.

[Note: These men were eventually apprehended; they're the same group with a white car that robbed several business premises, including Greer and Chintaman on the same day.]


Oct 20:

Nathram Chintaman:
Coverden, East Bank Dem. Store owner robbed by 5 armed bandits in a white car. He is beaten with gun butts. Loss: $252,000 (80,000 in cash and other merchandise, e.g., video recorder, walkerman, etc.) According to media reports, a policeman was nearby, who, after alerted, still went away. Further, when a report was made to the police at Timehri, they came, but only after stopping off at a barbeque first.

Aroma Resturant:
Kitty. restaurant owned by Chinese residents, attacked by 4 armed gunmen driving in a white car. A woman is beaten. Loss, $40,000.

Basmattie Persaud:
Robbed while in her car by man with a cutlass; gold band taken.

Savitri Prasad:
Zeelugt, West Coast Dem. Single parent of two pre-teen girls, is chopped, raped, murdered, and thrown into the Boerserie Creek. She was found in a pasture behind her village, where she went to collect her flock of goats. Note: her gold bangles and wedding ring, taken from her body, were left behind in open view.

Yang-Qi-Yang
: DeEdward Village, Berbice. Died after being chopped severly numerous times. Yang, a Chinese national, was chopped late in the night after he went to investigate a mysterious noise coming from the yard of a female acquaintance of his.

Oct 06:

Ramdyal Lilial
: Robbed by Carlton Montague, armed with a gun, in whose hired car Montague was traveling. Two gold chains , a watch, and $57,000 taken. Montague was caught later. Montague had also robbed Vishaul Persaud (on Sept 7) of agold chain and a watch valued at $92,000, using approached Persaud on Hadfield Streand used a knife.

Sept 30:

Gangadai and Ramnauth Ramdhan
: Cornelia Ida (CI), West Coast Dem. Operator of a small time home business, they are attacked by men with cutlasses who broke into their home. Mr. Ramdhan is chopped several times on the faceand shoulder. Loss, $5000.


Sept 24:


Dr. John Pluck:
Former senior PNC functionary, died at the Georgetown Public Hospital the following day after being shot in the stomach in the vicinity of Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Shortly after midnight, his car stalled; he and a female companion are accosted by three masked men. Dr. Pluck was once an advisor for Forbes Burnham.

Sept 23:

Millicent Sewbutchan (Auntie Millie):
Melville, Wakenaam, Essequibo. Senior citizen who lived alone and operated a small business, is brutally murdered. She was sexually assaulted (metal instrument inserted into her vagina), beaten, and strangled to death.

Sept 01:

Garvin France and Radica Boodram:
Field Six, Sophia. Poor, smalltime cakeshop owner, Mr. France is
shot to death; one bullet in his mouth, one in his stomach, and one in his foot. His terrified wife is forced to hand over $60,000 (all they have). Mr. France, who was only 25, leaves behind his 23-year-old wife, and two children, one 4-year-old, and one 4-month old.

Aug 20:

Kalowattie, Deowattie, and Seepaul Brijlall:
Pattersen/Sophia. Same armed bandits that attacked the Singhs beat and terrorized the Brijlalls. Kalowattie (25) who is
6 months pregnant, is stripped and beaten. Her husband Seepaul, suffered a gaping wound on the head after being hit with gun butt. His mother, Deowattie, is also beaten; she suffered a broken arm. Even the Brijlall's 8-year old daughter, Rajkumarie, has a gun placed at her throat as she is made to hand over her earrings. Total loss from both families: $200,000 in cash and jewelry.

Aug 20:

Jajdai, Roopnarine, and Babalo Singh
: Patterson/Sophia. Rajdai is shot in the stomach after attempting to pull off gunman's mask. Hospitalized, she died on September 1. Her husband, Roopnarine, is severely beaten by the bandits,
suffered a fractured jaw, is hospitalized. The same armed bandits proceeded to another house next-door, which is the relatives of the Singhs. (See below).

Jul 24:

Ina and Sonita Roberts
: Edinburg, Berbice. Sisters who operate a liquor store are attacked my 5 men armed with shotguns and knives. They are beaten on their heads with gun butts. Both are hospitalized. Allegedly one gunman aimed and pulled a trigger twice at Ina, but the gun failed. Taken: a large amount of money.[Villagers saw when the criminals entered. In a rare case, one criminal is chopped to death by members of the community policing group as he failed to scale the fence in an effort to escape.]

Colin Frazer:
Policeman enroute to John's residence is attacked by bandits and wounded. He is shot three times in the arm and hospitalized.

Indrani and Arjune John:
Goldsmith at Rampoor, Berbice. Gunmen with m/guns hand grenades etc., attacked and brutalised wife of goldsmith. She is beaten severely with a big stick as demands by bandits are made. One bandit grabbed the woman's infant and threw him on the chair, threatening to shoot the child if a key for a particular safe is not handed over. Taken: shotgun, at least $3 million in raw gold, silver, and money.

Ramesh Bharrat, Manoj Singh, John Sooklall, Nezam and Hubert Mohammed, Nankissoon Ramroop, and Dennis Persaud:
Fishermen at Montrose, ECD, terrorized by armed bandits who took off with their speed boat (used, according to the police, to transport them to Rampoor, Berbice, where they carried out the attack on the goldsmith's residence). One (N. Mohammed) is stabbed and all are doused with gasoline by bandits who threatened to light them afire. The boat is later recovered.

:
The single mother of two is attacked by at least one man with a pistol in Cambellville. She distraught woman said, "He held the gun to my neck and another came up and snatched my chain and bag."

Babita Bhola and family:
Stanleytown, WCD, family and friends attacked, beaten, and robbed by gunmen during birthday celebration. One gunman allegedly snatched her baby and "flung the child into a chair." Then he held a gun to the three-months-old baby while demanding cash. Another threatens to rape her if she does not give them cash. Bhola is beaten with a knife as such demands are made. $30,000 taken.

Jun 24:

Beerdat Sooklal and Dhanmattie Harrycharran:
Family at Success, ECD, attacked and robbed by gunmen. Husband and father-in-law, beaten and tied up.
One gunman threatens to rape the family's 11-year-old daughter if money/jewelry is not handed over; he "orders her (Dhanmattie, the mother) to strip and further threatened to shoot the daughter." $320,000 in cash and $40,000 in jewelry taken.
Jun 15:
Rahamat Alli.
Brickery, EBD. Ali is MURDERED (shot three times) when gunmen attacked his business. He died the following day.

Freddy Edwards:
"Channa" bomb attack at 3 am on family at Pike Street, Kitty. Windscreen of mini bus and house window damaged. Fortunately, the fire was put out in time. His wife was studying at the time when she was disturbed by the explosion.

May 31:

Devi and Peter Bassant:
Armed bandits attack at 4 am at Bassant's family in Eccles, East Bank Demerara. Their eighteen-year-old daughter (Rishma) who was watching TV when the bandits entered, began screaming. Family of four ordered to lie on the ground...Loss; $1 million.

May 27:


Ester, Rajwantee Budram, and family:
Elderly matriarch, her two daughters, and daughter-in-law, with three children, one only one year old, are attacked and "brutalized" by five armed bandits in Fyrish, Lower Corentyne. The old woman and one of her daughters is beaten about the head. She suffered severe trauma and cannot speak 24 hours after.

This is a second attack on the family; in 1996, Ester's son was badly beaten. Current loss; $500,000 in cash and jewelry.

May 22:

Rookmin Rajkumar-King:
Her family is terrorized for 2 hours after gunmen broke into her business. Loss: $1 million in goods and money. This is the fourth robbery on her place in two years. In 1999, her son was shot and killed by gunmen. Her application for a firearm was unsuccessful.

May 19:


The Mahaica/ Mahaicony-Abary/ Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) building at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice, is burnt down. The Rice Producer's Association (RPA) ruled it as a post-elections arsonist's job. It is listed here because like the RPA building that is burned down in Georgetown (GIMPEX building) in the April , it is associated with the rice industry, which is associated with Indians.

Harripersaud Nokta:
PPP Minister of Local Government and Regional Development. His vehicle is broken into, damage in excess of $100,000.

David Kissoondai:
Fish vendor MURDERED in Albouystown in the presence of his two sisters as they were on their way to buy fish. He is shot in the neck.

Dennis Rajnarine:
His 3-storied, 8-bedroomed historic, plantation house at Plantation Orange Nassau, upper East Coast is burned down. It was built by his great-great grandparents (indentured servants from India). It had 127 windows but only 99 were opened (because the governor's mansion had 100 windows).
May 07:
Terry Singh:
Beaten by demonstrators in Haslington, (after Enmore), East Coast. Robbed of jewelry ($30,000), $10,000 (cash), and driver's license.

May 05:

Fizal Khan and Radha Singh
: Couple that owns a grocery store in Best Village, West Bank Demerara, is robbed by armed men with a handgun, knives,and machetes. Taken: $150,000 worth in jewelry and $22,000 in cash.

10-year old. MURDERED, execution style
in East Coast backlands.

Bemchand Barran: (43) MURDERED, execution style in East Coast backlands.

Dhanpaul Jagdeo: (25) MURDERED, execution style in East Coast backlands.

Conductor of mini bus, is assaulted and robbed in Omai Street, Georgetown, by street protesters. Bus is burnt completely.

Hemoutie Saywack:
(Campbell Avenue, G/town)
is robbed by bandits in her home by threee armed bandits. Mrs. Saywack fainted upon seeing the men, leaving her 17-year old daughter in their presence. They held a gun to her head and robbed the family of $203 million in cash and jewelry. This family was robbed again in April 21, 2002.

Street protesters break into his home; windows broken and family threatened. Mr. Nazir is the leader of the United Force political party.

: (Enmore) Burnt from flammable liquid thrown into minibus that is stopped in Buxton. She jumps through a window and is chased by gang. Eventually hospitalized for burns. $30,000 taken.

Praimnauth Seepersaud: (Enmore) Burnt on hands and head from Channa bomb in same bus with Phagoo. Also hospitalized.

Kumkarran Chulai: Burnt on head and hands from Channa bomb in minibus with Seepersaud.

Tyrone Samaroo: (Foulis) Attacked on Buxton public road. Suffered a broken nose and injury to his left eye.

Clement and Aaron Da Silva: (Enmore): Assaulted and injured.

His storage bond in Barr Street, Kitty, is broken into. Stolen are articles and goods valued at $220,000.

Home is burned down in "mystery fire" in Rosignol, West Berbice. His daughter, Yindira, 15, received minor burns about her body.

Apr 18:
Truck carrying 225 bags of "Shakrukh" rice is stopped and looted in Buxton. The driver who is Indian is beaten and the vehicle damaged.

10-year girl chopped on thigh
as her family's bus coming from the airport is caught in traffic in Golden Grove during McKinnon's funeral. Four men are also chopped. Unsuccessful kidnap attempt of girl is made. Taken: $60,000, US$30,000, 6 suitcases, passports, jewelry, hand pieces, and a revolver.

Two Indian families in Grove, East Bank Demerara, including one business premise, robbed. One of the young men who runs the store is
pistol whipped.

Sophia. Shopkeeper is shot in the stomach and KILLED by a bandit when an attack is made on her family business. This is not the first time that they were attacked; an application for a fire arm by her husband since July 2000 remains futile. Mother leaves four children.

Truck is stopped in Ann's Grove and burned. The owner and three companions, all Indians, forced to flee site.

Bibi Nazmoon Khan:
Assaulted and stripped NAKED in her home. This attack comes at 6 am; her husband is chased off. Those who assaulted her include one woman.

Mumtaz Alli:
Arsonists strike using dry coconut truss and kerosene at his Gem Cinema at Enmore. Screen, cables, and speakers damaged; $6,500.00 US.

Ramesh Sugrim: Arsonists strike at his Shell gas station at La Union (near Crane), West Coast Demerara. "Channa" (bottle) bomb used. Loss: $30M.

Toolsie and Thakur Lakeram: Arson attempt on their building in Linden, which houses a restaurant and auto sales store.

Collie "Shrimpy" Allen: TV station operator is severely beaten by two masked gunmen who invaded the Linden Television station transmitting depot at Richmond Hill. Local transmission went blank after abrupt shutdown. The bandits left after the scuffle when the telephone rang.

R. Singh: Surinamese-Guyanese is attacked in Ann's Grove. He is beaten and robbed. His face required 14 stitches.

Fire in Georgetown: (Camp/Wellington Streets) Leaves numerous (9-12) stores in debris, including A.H. & L Kissoon, Anand's garment store, Dhoray's Fashions, Kirpalani and Sons, Sookraj & Sons, Archie's Electrical Store, Shamdas Kirpalani, Global Enterprise, Royal Jewel House, and Daswaney's.

MURDERED. He was 27. He operated a grocery where he was shot in the stomach by a bandit.

Donna McKinnon: MURDERED. Unclear who shot her; bystander watching antigovernment protesters near Freedom House.

Ramnarine Bhoda: Shot. Unclear who shot him; bystander watching antigovernment protesters near Freedom House. He had a bullet lodged near spine (not sure if it was removed yet).

Abon, Doreen Mohammed and Family
: Armed bandits
terrorized family of eight at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, before escaping with more than $1 million in gold and diamond jewelry and about $60,000 in cash. Wife, Doreen and daughters (Annette and Natasha Allitakeen) are taken into a room and stripped of all jewelry. Mr. Mohammed is an Imam.

kidnapped (vicinity of Parliament), held, and beaten in car for about 20 minutes during post-elections unrest in the city

Alimoon Ali and Ahmad Shaheed:
Owners of minibus assaulted and robbed when PNC supporters attacked them in the Kitty bus park during lawsuit to stop swearing in of Jagdeo as President. Ahmad said one of the demonstrators attempted to chop him with a cutlass.

Furniture factory burned down at Middle Road, Vryheid's Lust, East Coast Demerara. Loss of stock and machinery at $28 million. Mr. Sugrim is a known supporter of ROAR political party.

Franklin Thomas and Oswald Fraser
:
Black PPP members are abducted and taken by PNC supporters to PNC HQ, Congress Place, where they're held captive and beaten with sticks. Fraser's house in Sophia is also ransacked and articles stolen...and firebombs are thrown into yard later that night.

Haslyn Parris:
PNC/R member is attacked, beaten, and his car destroyed by PNC supporters after Mr. Parris accepted that the final elections result/ count which showed a PPP/C victory was good

Devika Persaud:
Her home in Peter Street, Annandale, is
burned down in "mystery" fire. She and her two daughters, Nazir, 7, and Nazeela, 11, are now homeless. Also lost is all of her stock which she sells at the Annandale market.

Desmond Trotman
: WPA member is "surrounded, manhandled and robbed" by alleged PNC supporters when he went to collect two female WPA polling agents. Lost: ring, watch and $48,000.

Robbed at knife-point by Shawn Thomas of gold ring and $14,000. Cash.

Mini bus driver shot in botched robbery attack by two armed men at New Hope, East Bank Demerara. Shot in the lower ribcage area.
